With JMU’s Spring Career and Internship Fair coming up tomorrow and Wednesday, over 140 employers will be making their way to Harrisonburg to recruit Dukes to join their various companies. Did you know that several of these employers are JMU alumni? Every year JMU alumni take part in our career fairs because really, who knows JMU and what it has to offer better than former Dukes themselves! Between Tuesday and Wednesday more than twenty-five JMU alums will be on campus representing their companies and they are more than thrilled to be a part of it. Natalie Street of Omni Hotels & Resorts says, “I always enjoy coming back to JMU and try to recruit whenever possible! We have several JMU alums at my hotel and within my company; we know good employees when we see them”.
The alumni that will be in attendance at the career fair want to see JMU students succeed, therefore offering some great advice to students who will be in attendance because of their insider perspective as a former student. Anthony Russo of Kaztronix says, “JMU students always seem very well prepared for the Career Fairs; so with that being said, make sure to do your research to get the most out of attending”. Another JMU alum and recruiter from the Henrico Country Police Division, Sarah Sclafani says that they are searching for students who want to inspire and lead. Christine Ryder, from Metro Systems Inc. says, “I think that it is very important for students to look at the career fair as an interview. It can lead to another interview and potentially even your first job! My advice is to come ready by making a game plan before you go, research the companies, and most importantly dress as if it were an interview. Be open to talk to all companies, not just the big company. Even if it is not something you are not particularly interested in, but becoming confident and comfortable having these conversations with employers is so important and excellent practice as you begin interviewing”. Liz Viola, coming to JMU from John Moriarty & Associates of Virginia, Inc. (JMA) says that JMA’s most successful employees are self-starters who are looking for a challenge and can think out of the box.
Each of these alums offers valuable advice that students should take into consideration when getting ready for the career fair. For more information on what to expect and ways to prepare for the Career Fair, visit JMU CAP’s website at http://www.jmu.edu/cap/fair/spring-students.shtml.
